What the salt does

Salt settles on everything within a few blocks of the ocean, and it does not rinse off in the rain the way ordinary grime does. It sits in the finish, holds moisture, and gives algae a head start — which is why a beach house can look tired a few months after a wash while the same house in Mandarin still looks fine.

The other beach problem is sand. It gets into screen tracks, along the bottom rail of a fence and across the deck, and it is abrasive, so it is worth rinsing off rather than sweeping. We usually end up doing the house, the deck and the enclosure together here, because they all pick up the same thing.
